Machiya are traditional townhouses, typically two-storeys, and served as both residential and commercial buildings where merchants and craftsmen lived and worked. They are the symbolic architecture that defines the traditional townscape of Kyoto. It is said that the origin of Machiya existed as early as 794AD, and has evolved multifariously over its history, clearly reflecting the lifestyle of Kyoto, its generation and culture at the time. Fortunately, Kyoto was relatively spared from the bombing of World War II, and continues to pass on the beauty of its traditional townscape today.
However, in the recent years, the number of Machiya is rapidly decreasing due to demolition and reconstruction as a part of urbanization. Unfortunately, once Machiya are torn down, they are extremely difficult to rebuild under current Japanese building standards law, making it harder to maintain the townscape of the historic city of Kyoto that has been passed on from antiquity.
At Machiya Residence Inn, a fully chartered accommodation in Kyoto, we re-analyze the structure of these aging Machiya, apply appropriate modifications, obtain official hotel license and operate them as accommodation facilities.
