In the spring, enjoy the cherry blossom trees, which provide a beautifully pink backdrop. Taking advantage of its location, and incorporating the breathtaking views as its backdrop, Takase-an offers you a bright & airy atmosphere during your stay in Kyoto.

From dark, hardwood flooring and delicate paper light fixtures in the Western-style rooms, and traditional tatami flooring and shoji doors in the Japanese-style rooms, this house will provide you with the aesthetic design of both modern & traditional architecture.  



Walk along the Takasegawa River to find a hidden gem within this bustling city. A “private” entrance, separate you from the main road to lead you to a quiet sanctuary.

A fully functional kitchen with a dining table & chairs. Relax with a cup of “Machiya Blend” coffee or tea before you start your day. Slide open the window, and you’ll have a perfect view of the Takasegawa River.

Japanese-style Living Room:

A quintessentially Japanese-style room with tatami-lined floors, delicate paper doors, and a low table. As this room provides sunken-floors, even those who are not used to sitting at a Japanese-style table will be able to do so comfortably.

A tsuboniwa garden — quintessential in machiya houses. Enjoy the beauty of Kyoto’s four seasons of your own personal garden.


Japanese cedar wood covers walls of the bath area to provide warmth, and an inviting atmosphere. Look out the window to find a beautiful tsukubai (stone water basin), found in many zen gardens & used by temple visitors in a cleansing ritual.

2F Western-Style Bedroom:

With high ceilings revealing wooden beams & showcasing the beautiful architecture, you will no doubt be able to appreciate the design of this machiya. A large window stretches across to look over the river — enjoy the changing scenery with each season as you relax in this bedroom.

From Kyoto Station to Takase-an by Bus
-Approximately 10 minutes by train:

  1. Take the #205, #17, #4 Kyoto City BUS
  2. Get off at “Kawaramachi Gojo” Bus Stop
  3. Walk towards Takasegawa River (高瀬川)
  4. Go down stairs (located next to the cafe)
  5. Walk along the Takasegawa River to Takase-an (Approximately 1 minute on foot)
From Kyoto Station to Takase-an by Taxi
Approximately 9 minutes (1.9 km; Taxi fare is approximately 600~900 yen)

Kyoto is a walking-friendly city — we recommend spending time walking through the small & winding streets or renting a bike to explore the city!

Simply follow the Takasegawa River north and find yourself at the shopping districts of Kawaramachi. Venture further, and you will be lead to the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and Shimogamo Shrine.

If you cross the Kamogawa River, you’ll be able to explore Gion, Yasaka Shrine, Kiyomizu Temple, and the winding streets of Ninenzaka (二年坂) & Sannenzaka (三年坂).
