Sanjusangen-do, a buddhist temple located in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, was built in 1164. The temple, whose name literally means hall with 33 spaces between columns, is an impressive structure with a deep root in Kyoto’s history. Built by the Toyotomi family during their rule over Japan, the Main Southern Gate is of particular significance to the country as a cultural property.



Located near the Sanjusangen-do, Zanmai-an is a fusion of Japanese-style with modern design.  You will be able to enjoy modern comfort and conveniences while maintaining a link to Japanese culture through the history that permeates the house as well as surrounding area.  Tucked away in a tranquil and serene street, Zanmai-an is the embodiment of light and airy.

“Zanmai-an” is a two-story, fully furnished Japanese-style machiya tucked away within a peaceful local neighborhood. This machiya has stood for over 100 years, immersed in Sanjusangen-do’s deep history, and provides a window through which to explore Higashiyama, where Kyoto’s most sought after attractions lie unexplored.


Zanmai-an, characterized by its distinct lattices, will have you imagining yourself in a more reminicent time period of Japan. Located on a quiet, local street, your first step into Zanmai-an will feel as if you’re stepping into the past to begin your Kyoto adventure.


The entranceway connects the living room to the front garden by way of 3 large glass windows, giving the machiya a bright and airy atmosphere. The front garden has been decorated simply, ensuring that the machiya receives plenty of light from outside. During your stay, and especially after a long day out in Kyoto, you can relax by gazing out at the calming garden.

Living Room:

As you enter, the black tile floor and the soft ceiling boards provide a pleasing contrast. We have created an open area for you to relax through large glass windows that allow you to gaze out at the front garden from the living room.The living/dining room area includes a TV, table, and an inviting sofa that looks out into the garden, where you can relax and wind down after a day of exploring the city. For your comfort, a comfortably sized sofa as well as a chair provide seating in a room that fuses the design elements of modern with Japanese tradition.

The flooring has been equipped with floor heating, for your comfort during colder seasons.

When more than 3 guests stay at this house, 1 sofa bed is also available in the living room on the first floor.


Kyoto is renowned for the delicious cuisine as well as being home to quality produce. While staying in a machiya, you have the option to explore local restaurants or prepare your own meal. With Zanmai-an’s open kitchen, as well as basic cooking supplies provided, you’ll have all you need at your fingertips to cook the various foods you purchase while out in the city.


On the first floor, you will find 1 bathroom (western-style toilet, shower/bathtub), hair dryer, iron, ironing board, and a washing machine.

2nd Floor Bedroom:

Continuing the modern-Japanese style, the bedroom is a simple and relaxing room. With 3 beds, its most distinct feature is the large exposed beam.  This air-conditioned, western-styled bedroom with 3 single beds that offering a calming and relaxing environment.

Room Layout

 Zanmai-an sits within Higashiyama district, the epicenter of tourist attractions in Kyoto. Located in the southern area of the district, the machiya is located to the east of Kyoto Tower.  As if providing a back-drop to make your stay more memorable, Zanmai is within 500 meters of the Kamogawa River, Sanjusangen-do, and the Kyoto National Museum.
A short walk can also lead you to the Chawanzaka, a lively road centered around Japanese pottery that leads up to the Kiyomizu-dera Temple.  Venturing further to the north will open the way to the Yasaka Shrine as well as the colorful and vivid world that is the Gion area.



From Kyoto Station to Zanmai-an by Bus
-Approximately 9 minutes by Bus:

  1. Take the No.100 or 206 or 208
  2. Get off at “Hakubutsukan Sanjusangendo Mae” bus stop
  3. Walk to Zanmai-an (Approximately 5 minutes by foot)
From Kyoto Station to Zanmai-an by Taxi
– Approximately 12 minutes by Taxi (about 2.1 kilometers)

*You can get to Kyoto station from Kansai International Airport by JR Express HARUKA line (approximately 80 minutes by train)

① Warajiya
Established in 1624, this is a long-standing restaurant specializing in unagi. The menu is limited to unagi nabe, or Japanese eel hot pot, and unagi rice gruel.

② Okumura
You can enjoy Kyoto-style home coooking in this restaurant that lets you feel the atmosphere of Kyoto. There is an English menu available.

③ Touzan
A traditional japanese restaurant located inside the Hyatt Regency Hotel. You can enjoy Japanese cuisine such as Edo-style sushi and charcoal grilled foods.

④ Karafune Coffee Shop
A coffee shop established in 1972, it is located within a historical museum.

⑤ Higashiyama PINE Cafe
Enjoy coffee or a light meal in an old Japanese-style house that has been converted into a cafe.

⑥ Amazon Cafe
Available for breakfast in the morning, we recommend trying their Japanese style egg sandwich.

⑦ Inoue Bakery
Enjoy elaborate and thoughtfully made bread and pastries at a reasonable price here.

⑧ Honmachitei
A long established western-style restaurant where you’ll be more than satisfied by the volume of the meals.

⑨ Kiyomizu Ippouen
A restarant with a Japanese-modern atmosphere located near the Sanjusangen-do. You can enjoy snacks and tea here, in addition to the tea buckwheat noodles and Japanese wheat noodles.
