“Otabisho-an” machiya house can be found a short 7-minute walk from Kyoto Station (Hachijo Exit). The perfect location to begin your travels, you can visit the numerous sightseeing attraction surrounding Kyoto Station, or take a short train ride away to easily visit all that Kyoto has to offer.

To the North of Kyoto Station is Higashi Honganji Temple & Shosei-en Garden – this temple offers visitors a chance to walk around a large, sprawling complex & view Kyoto’s largest wooden structure. Take the JR Nara line South and find yourself at Fushimi Inari Taisha -- a popular shrine home to the thousands of red-vermillion coloured “torii” gates.

  • Otabisho-an Exterior: As you weave your way through the neighborhood, you’ll come across a large, vermillion coloured Torii gate (鳥居). “Otabisho-an” machiya house is situated to the right of this vibrantly colored gate — with its windows covered in wooden latticework contrasting the white stucco walls.
  • Otabisho-an Entrance: A spacious entrance with an impressive wooden beam stretching across its high ceilings will welcome you into Otabisho-an. Push aside the traditional-style, wooden sliding doors to reveal the dining & kitchen area.
  • Otabisho-an Kitchen/Dining Room: This open space area combines both the kitchen & dining area – a large dining table that can seat up to 6 guests. Buy local groceries from Nishiki Market, and cook & dine together around the table. Wine-red coloured tiles, rich mahogany wood, jet-black & stainless steel kitchen fixtures complete the kitchen area.
  • Otabisho-an Living Room: Contrasting the darker hues of the kitchen & dining room, you will find a light and airy space with plenty of natural light. Traditional paper-lantern light fixtures, tatami-flooring, and a kimono fabric decorate this living space.

Borrowing its name from the shrine located in its backyard, this traditional machiya house will envelope you in history & transport you a world away.
Taking inspiration from the famous Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine, this machiya house incorporates the golden-yellow hues of the “inari,” vibrant colours of the vermillion torii gates, and the symbol of the fox throughout the house.

A mere 5 minute walk from Kyoto Station, you will be able to visit all of Kyoto's most well-known attractions, and hidden gems -- perfect for first time visitors & for those who have had the opportunity to visit Kyoto numerous times!

Head west towards Arashiyama, an area known for its picturesque Bamboo Forest, and Tenryuji Temple. Uji City (a 20 minute train ride), is famous for its matcha green tea production. You can visit Byodoin Temple, a World Heritage Site that has been memorialized on the back of the 10 yen coin.
