ABOUT THE MACHIYA HOUSE
As you weave your way through the neighborhood, you’ll come across a large, vermillion coloured Torii gate (鳥居). “Otabisho-an” machiya house is situated to the right of this vibrantly colored gate — with its windows covered in wooden latticework contrasting the white stucco walls.
A spacious entrance with an impressive wooden beam stretching across its high ceilings will welcome you into Otabisho-an. Push aside the traditional-style, wooden sliding doors to reveal the dining & kitchen area.
This open space area combines both the kitchen & dining area – a large dining table that can seat up to 6 guests. Buy local groceries from Nishiki Market, and cook & dine together around the table. Wine-red coloured tiles, rich mahogany wood, jet-black & stainless steel kitchen fixtures complete the kitchen area.
Contrasting the darker hues of the kitchen & dining room, you will find a light and airy space with plenty of natural light. Traditional paper-lantern light fixtures, tatami-flooring, and a kimono fabric decorate this living space.
