ABOUT THE MACHIYA HOUSE
The design of this space took influence from the traditional Japanese tearoom – details including a semicircular lampshade on the ceiling, and a paper partition serve to recreate this traditional room. Beautiful as much as it is functional, the tearoom found in Japanese homes served as a place to welcome company.
From the “degoshi,” or protruding lattice windows, you can enjoy the interplay of shadow and light over the Kyoto scenery as the sun rises and sets.
“Washi,” delicately thin Japanese paper line the sliding doors and windows, while large wooden beams stretch across the ceiling to highlight the machiya architecture. Other details include: lacquer, plastered earthen walls, and fixtures (paneled doors) made by special techniques that date back to the Heian Period.
・Up to 2 Futon bedding can be set here
A fully function kitchen, where you will be free to cook light meals during your stay. Inside the classic cupboard are traditional plates and utensils, and updated kitchen facilities.
The bathroom tiles are made from “Towadaishi,” which are blue-white and blue-green hued stones that can only be mined from a small region of Aichi Prefecture.
Natural light and a gentle breeze pour in from the Japanese tsuboniwa garden. From the cypress wood-lined bathroom, guests can enjoy a beautiful view of the greenery in the courtyard garden. Please make yourself at home and enjoy your machiya stay.
The earthen walls of the western-styled bedroom have been plastered using a traditional technique in which layer after layer of clay are painstakingly applied. Rounding out this room is the reed ceiling, and the Japanese paper-lantern that provides a warm atmosphere for you to relax in.
・2 twin-sized beds will be set in this room.
The large window of this room, know as a “mushikomado” (as it resembles an insect cage), provides plenty of natural light in the traditional Japanese-styled room. A wooden table at the end of the room is the perfect area for you to get ready for the day.
・1 futon bedding will be set in this room.
