A traditional machiya house, located within a neighborhood steeped in history.
Wooden accents envelop the entire house to provide a warm and inviting atmosphere, while the large lattice windows, and tsuboniwa garden create a bright and airy space. You can choose to enjoy a comfortable meal together with family and friends seated at the large dining table, or take a rest within the tatami-lined Japanese room after a day of exploring the city.
Take a morning stroll to Kiyomizu Temple, a short 5 minute walk away, or explore the streets of Gion and Hanamikoji street. If you would like to explore the mysterious bamboo forests of Arashiyama, jump onto the local Kyoto City bus or take the subway. Discover quaint shops, and local eateries as you weave through the stone-cobbled streets.

ABOUT THE MACHIYA HOUSE
Follow a flight of steps down, and continue walking towards the end of an alleyway to find the latticed wooden doors of Bonbori-an on your right.
Wickerwork, known as ajiro tenjo that is often found in tea rooms, covers the entire ceiling. The kitchen is fitted with modern appliances, cooking utensils and more for you to cook and enjoy light meals.

A bathroom & separate toilet space is available on the 1st Floor. A goemon-style (cauldron) bathtub — reminiscent of traditional bathtubs Japanese locals used to relax within– also awaits you after a day of exploring the city. In the morning, take a refreshing shower beneath the waterfall shower head.

We ask for advance payment of full accommodation fees for guests who have made a reservation with Machiya Residence Inn. The reservation will remain as a “tentative reservation” until payment has been confirmed. All payments must be made within 7 days of making a reservation.
When a reservation request has been received, we will send an email instructing you on payment methods.* Payments are accepted in Japanese YEN via: 1) Credit Card transaction via Paypal, or 2) Bank Wire Transfer to our nominated bank account.

Once the payment has been confirmed, you will receive a booking “Confirmation Email” from Machiya Residence Inn. The email will include important information regarding check-in, access maps, instructions on how to enter the house, and more.
We kindly ask that you inform our staff in advance of your approximate arrival time as your date of arrival (check-in date) approaches.
Cancellation of an accommodation booking may incur cancellation charges.
A cancellation that is made more than 29 days prior to the arrival date is subject to a full refund minus any PayPal or Wire Transfer fees involved in receiving and returning the original payment.
