A machiya house that has stood since the Taisho Period – this particular machiya holds a history as a former porcelain doll shop.
Renovated with plastered earthen walls and “washi” (delicately-made, thin Japanese paper), over 100 years of history radiates throughout this authentic Kyoto house.
Gojo-zaka ・Chawanzaka – both of these areas are known as the birthplace of “Kiyomizu-yaki” (pottery and porcelain that have been exquisitely designed by skilled craftsmen). You can also discover “Nishijin” silk fabrics, Kyoto “sensu” (Japanese folding fan), and Kyoto-inspired Japanese “wagashi” treats — this neighborhood is brimming with culture and history that is waiting to be explored.
Despite this machiya house being located in the center of a popular and bustling Kyoto neighborhood, “Choya Chawanzaka” will offer you a serene hideaway during your holiday in Kyoto. Push aside the first floor shoji doors (paper-sliding doors), to reveal a spacious room in which you can unwind.

A fully functional kitchen can be found on the 1st floor. Because all of the basic kitchen necessities are available, you will be free to use the kitchen to make light meals during your stay.
Designed to accommodate up to 10 guests, you will find a washroom with 2 large mirrors, and a separate toilet area (washlet) available on the first floor.
