From the exterior, “Gunjo-an” machiya house may seem compact & small in size. However, slide open the lattice doors to reveal a spacious house that can accommodate up to 8 guests.
The typical layout of the machiya house depicts the interesting history of this city, and the lives these Kyoto natives lead. In the past, many traditional machiya houses were used as not only a living space, but also served as a storefront for merchants and tradesmen -- hence the narrow entrance way (former storefront), but larger living area towards the back.
