Kyoto -- the former capital of Japan -- is not only known for its unique history, but the cityscape and layout of the city itself. The streets have of Kyoto have been designed in a grid pattern-- each road running North & South, or East to West-- with the Imperial Palace located within the heart of the city.
Take the Kyoto City Subway to the west, and find yourself in Arashiyama. You'll be able to explore the lush green bamboo forests, marvel at the mountains, and appreciate the Tenryuji Temple and gardens.
Head east to find yourself in Gion, and the Higashiyama Area -- where streets are filled with shrines, stone cobbled streets, and rows of traditional houses.
Venture north towards the Imperial Palace -- the heart of the city, and with impressive ground filled with cherry blossom & plum blossom trees.

ABOUT THE MACHIYA HOUSE
Walk down a narrow alleyway and find yourself greeted by a row of traditional machiya houses. The lattice wooden frames, which surround the windows of Kumashu-an allow for natural light to brighten the interior.
Japanese Living Room (1F)
A large, and comfortable table with a traditional paper lantern fixture that hangs above. Reminisce about your day as you relax and enjoy a cup of tea, or look out towards the tsuboniwa garden.

A tiled bathroom, that features a ceiling of cyprus wood is available for your to rejuvenate in after a day of traveling, or pamper yourself as your ready for the day. A separate toilet area is located on the 1st floor.
The “tsuboniwa garden” is a common feature found in traditional Japanese machiya houses.
Sitting Room – 2nd Floor
The floors are covered by Japanese sugi wood, which reveal the natural characteristics. There are 2 chairs, and a coffee table in this room — the ideal space for you to relax in comfortable during your stay.
Push aside the shoji doors — a calming blue color — to reveal the bedroom. Illuminated by traditional paper lanterns, a soft glow that radiates throughout this space creates a calming space for you to retreat to after a day of exploring the city.

We ask for advance payment of full accommodation fees for guests who have made a reservation with Machiya Residence Inn. The reservation will remain as a “tentative reservation” until payment has been confirmed. All payments must be made within 7 days of making a reservation.
When a reservation request has been received, we will send an email instructing you on payment methods.* Payments are accepted in Japanese YEN via: 1) Credit Card transaction via Paypal, or 2) Bank Wire Transfer to our nominated bank account.

Once the payment has been confirmed, you will receive a booking “Confirmation Email” from Machiya Residence Inn. The email will include important information regarding check-in, access maps, instructions on how to enter the house, and more.
We kindly ask that you inform our staff in advance of your approximate arrival time as your date of arrival (check-in date) approaches.
Cancellation of an accommodation booking may incur cancellation charges.
A cancellation that is made more than 29 days prior to the arrival date is subject to a full refund minus any PayPal or Wire Transfer fees involved in receiving and returning the original payment.
