ABOUT THE MACHIYA HOUSE
A machiya with an exterior not commonly associated with the traditional machiya style — its white walls are coated with “shikkui,” or stucco, which is often used by craftsmen to coat the walls of temples, shrines, and traditional houses.
Much of the interior is made from Japanese cypress and other natural materials native to Kyoto. The rooms are finished with a classic clay wall and plaster techniques– all combined to create a space where you can feel the warmth that is friendly to both the people and environment.
Hidden behind a set of sliding “shoji” doors is a fully functioning kitchen, where you will be able to cook light meals with ingredients from the local supermarket. This kitchen opens up into the living room to allow any number of guests to cook and dine together within the same space.
Garden/Smaller Japanese Room:
This smaller tatami room has a clear view of the “tsuboniwa,” or Japanese garden. The large windows allow a flood of natural light to brighten the space.
・1 x Japanese futon bedding can be set
Enjoy bathing in a “Hinoki buro,” a bathtub designed and crafted using the Japanese cypress wood. The golden hue of the Hinoki wood radiates warmth that will allow for you to refresh after a long day of sightseeing.
・2 x Toilets (1F)
2F Western-Style Room:
The wooden floor is made of pinewood, and painted dark brown using the renowned “fuki-urushi” technique. This traditional technique involves painting and wiping off “urushi,” or Japanese lacquer, multiple times to make the grain glossy and smooth.
・2 x Twin-sized Beds
2F Japanese-Style Bedroom:
A lounge room can also be found on the second floor. Lined with tatami flooring, and encased by traditional mud walls (jyuraku kabe), this room showcases another aspect of the washitsu (Japanese room).
