Located in Nakagyo-ku (中京区), which refers to the central area of the city, this particular area of Kyoto will offer you countless opportunities to visit the city’s most famous attractions.
Its close proximity to a lively local 商店街 ("shoutengai" - long street lined with various markets and eateries), will allow you to shop and dine as the locals do. Explore a side of Kyoto that is hidden from the guide books to make your stay in Kyoto an unforgettable experience.
This house is a short walk away from Nijo Castle, Mibu Temple, Nishiki Market, the Shinsen-en Garden, and more. The popular Gion area is also easily accessible from Sumire-an. Take a 10 minute bus ride, and head East towards this beautifully preserved historical neighborhood. ABOUT THE MACHIYA HOUSE
Lattice windows filters natural light within the machiya while offering its residents a place of privacy. Sumire-an is one of the many machiya houses lining this charming neighborhood -- complete with a stone-paved street.
A fully functional kitchen can be found on the 1st floor. Because all of the basic kitchen necessities are available, you will be free to use the kitchen to make light meals during your stay.
This garden has features the Japanese maple tree – lush, and a vibrant green during the spring and summer. The stone-paved path surrounding the tree will provide the perfect backdrop to these leaves as they turn a bright, crimson color in the autumn.
The bathroom not only features a Japanese Hinoki wood bathtub– which gives off a distinctive warm, lemon scent – but the entire room is enveloped in this traditional machiya house feature.

A "horigotatsu" table (Japanese-style low table, with sunken flooring) can be found in the Japanese room. This table is perfect for guests who would like to experience sitting down on tatami-flooring, but are not used to sitting with their legs tucked underneath.

The windows of this room provide plenty of natural light, and light from the “hibukuro”– a traditional Japanese machiya feature, which acted as a chimney in the past. There is also an additional washbasin, and a large mirror in this bedroom for your convenience

We ask for advance payment of full accommodation fees for guests who have made a reservation with Machiya Residence Inn. The reservation will remain as a “tentative reservation” until payment has been confirmed. All payments must be made within 7 days of making a reservation.
When a reservation request has been received, we will send an email instructing you on payment methods.* Payments are accepted in Japanese YEN via: 1) Credit Card transaction via Paypal, or 2) Bank Wire Transfer to our nominated bank account.

Once the payment has been confirmed, you will receive a booking “Confirmation Email” from Machiya Residence Inn. The email will include important information regarding check-in, access maps, instructions on how to enter the house, and more.
We kindly ask that you inform our staff in advance of your approximate arrival time as your date of arrival (check-in date) approaches.
Cancellation of an accommodation booking may incur cancellation charges.
A cancellation that is made more than 29 days prior to the arrival date is subject to a full refund minus any PayPal or Wire Transfer fees involved in receiving and returning the original payment.
