‘Sumire-an’ machiya house: a traditional Kyoto holiday house (vacation rental) located down a charming stone-paved path and nestled amongst a row of traditional Japanese-style homes. This machiya house is within walking distance of UNESCO World Heritage Site Nijo Castle, and has easy access to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, historical Gion neighborhood, and more.

As you approach ‘Sumire-an’, you’ll be greeted by quintessential features of a classic Kyoto-style machiya house: wooden koshi lattice windows, kawara roof tiles, a mushikomado window, and more. Open the door to enter into a bright & airy atmosphere, and relax in a space that showcases both traditional & modern Japanese designs. With 2 bedrooms, a spacious Japanese-style living room, kitchen, bathroom, and garden, ‘Sumire-an’ machiya house is perfect place to stay with groups or for special occasion trips.

Make a reservation at the neighboring machiya house, Akane-an, and stay in Kyoto with larger groups of family and friends. Akane-an machiya house can accommodate up to 4 guests for a total of 10 guests.

About This Machiya House

Quintessential Kyoto-style Exterior As you approach a hidden, stone-paved street, a row of beautifully preserved traditional Japanese homes will come into view. 'Sumire-an' machiya house features black lattice woodwork and a soft, earth-tone exterior. Open the door to reveal a bright and airy machiya house.

Traditional Living Room Feel free to stretch out your legs at the 'horigotatsu' table (a low table with sunken flooring beneath, which makes sitting on the floor more comfortable). Savor a cup of Japanese tea as you gaze out onto the garden.

Western-style Living Room Adjacent to the tatami-lined Japanese room is a spacious, modern room. You can store all of your luggage here, or if you are staying with more than 4 guests, futon beddings will be set here (with extra mattress paddings for a comfortable night's sleep) .

Bedding Set-up: The number of beddings prepared will match the number of guests you have made a reservation for, and not the maximum capacity.
Please take a look at the floor plan for details on what beddings are available in this house (as it will differ depending on each house). To make a request for a specific bedding set-up, you must contact MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN at least 2 days before your check-in date. Up to 2 children (5-years-old and younger) staying under our “Children’s Policy” will be required to share a bedding with another guests.

Is this a hotel in Kyoto?: No, this is not a hotel in Kyoto. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kyoto!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
