West of the Grand Imperial Palace lies a machiya house that reflects the traditional and charming features of Japan’s former capital. “Tachibana-an” machiya house neighbours the old Imperial Palace (御所 Gosho), which had been a place of residence for the Imperial family for more than 1,000 years. Within the earthen walls that surround the palace grounds is the Imperial Palace Park – a sprawling area featuring lush greenery that can be enjoyed with the changing seasons.
You’ll find Japanese sakura in the spring, vibrant green trees providing cool shade during the summer months, & autumn featuring brightly coloured leaves of the maple trees.

ABOUT THE MACHIYA HOUSE
A few feet away from the Kyoto Imperial Palace, you will find a machiya house designed with dark, wooden lattice windows contrasting its white walls. Although small and modest at first glance, one step into “Tachibana-an” and you will find yourself in a spacious and airy traditional house.
Japanese Room (Entrance):
This tatami-lined area features custom-made washi paper (和紙; delicately thin Japanese paper) — designed with the concept of the “circle of life” in mind, this golden-hued washi gently reflects the light filtering through the windows.
A fully functional kitchen can be found on the 1st floor. Because all of the basic kitchen necessities are available, you will be free to use the kitchen to make light meals during your stay.
A dining table is available for you in this open-plan space. Ideal for guests who are not accustomed to the tatami floor seating — there will be cushion seatings, and 2 chairs available when sitting at the dining table.
Enjoy the traditional elements found in many Japanese gardens. A small, stone-carved pagoda, a Japanese water fountain known as “sozu,” and the rich green hues of the plants and trees featured within the “tsuboniwa”.
This bathroom has been designed using tiles resembling wooden planks and green & black ceramic detailing. At the foot of this spacious bathtub is a window– unwind after a day of traveling as you peer out into the “tsuboniwa” garden.
