If you would like to visit a temple during your early morning walk, take a 5-minute stroll to the grand Higashi Honganji Temple, or Shosei-en Garden.
A neighborhood supermarket located just around the corner will provide you with fresh local produce for you to use in the fully function kitchen. Get lost exploring the neighborhood, and you will discover a multitude of restaurants and cafes frequented by your neighbors. ABOUT THE MACHIYA HOUSE
A machiya house that boasts many traditional characteristic features — the exterior makes use of the “Ichi-monji” roof tiling, retro-style gas lanterns, and lattice windows.
Take a step inside, and you will find ceilings and walls made from earthen plaster, tatami flooring, and old-fashioned beams. Antique wooden fixtures and furnishings are tastefully displayed in the living room.
Much of the interior is made from Japanese cypress and other natural materials native to Kyoto. The rooms are finished with a classic clay wall and plaster techniques– all combined to create a space where you can feel the warmth that is friendly to both the people and environment.
The kitchen space is hidden behind wooden, sliding latticed doors. Behind these doors, you will fully functioning kitchen, where you will be able to cook light meals with ingredients from the local supermarket.
A modern, cedar wood-lined bathroom will allow you to relax and rejuvenate after a long day of sightseeing. From the bathtub, a window looks out into the small garden to offer guests a sense of serenity.

Gardens found in a machiya are not only visually appealing, but also function as a practical design of the house. “Tsuboniwa” gardens were constructed to funnel the wind, and cool down the inside of the machiya during the hot summer months.

The large bedroom takes up the entire 2nd floor of this house. The environmentally friendly bedroom is made from natural materials including floors made from Japanese cedar, & traditional mud plastered walls built by craftsmen.

We ask for advance payment of full accommodation fees for guests who have made a reservation with Machiya Residence Inn. The reservation will remain as a “tentative reservation” until payment has been confirmed. All payments must be made within 7 days of making a reservation.
When a reservation request has been received, we will send an email instructing you on payment methods.* Payments are accepted in Japanese YEN via: 1) Credit Card transaction via Paypal, or 2) Bank Wire Transfer to our nominated bank account.
*We seek your understanding that all transaction fees involved are under guest responsibility.
Once the payment has been confirmed, you will receive a booking “Confirmation Email” from Machiya Residence Inn. The email will include important information regarding check-in, access maps, instructions on how to enter the house, and more.
We kindly ask that you inform our staff in advance of your approximate arrival time as your date of arrival (check-in date) approaches.
Cancellation of an accommodation booking may incur cancellation charges.
A cancellation that is made more than 29 days prior to the arrival date is subject to a full refund minus any PayPal or Wire Transfer fees involved in receiving and returning the original payment.
