Although it may be humid, the summer season in Kyoto offers various events and beautiful green scenery. While the inner city offers one of the most famous festivals in Japan, the mountains on the outskirts provide a cool escape from the heat while offering breathtaking scenery. Find out some of our recommended ways to spend the summer season in Kyoto and our favorite spots to add to your checklist!

Summer in Kyoto isn't complete without wearing a yukata at least once. The yukata is a traditional robe, similar to the kimono, made of lighter fabrics such as cotton. It is the perfect outfit to take a stroll in the traditional neighborhood of Gion, or to take pictures in against the backdrop of Kyoto's famous temples and shrines. They come in all different colors and a myriad of patterns, so you will be able to find the perfect yukata for your Kyoto trip!
A 30 minute cable ride from the main city of Kyoto is the peaceful and quiet Kibune Shrine. Located on Kurama Mountain, this area is often several degrees cooler then the main city due to its mountain location and soothing river running throughout the area. After an easy hike through the cedar forest and the shrines dedicated to the god of water, we recommend enjoying a dip in one of the onsen hot springs available.
The Kamogawa River is a beloved symbol of Kyoto enjoyed by all ages. One of the most anticipated events in summer is the opening of the Kawadoko by the shops lining the river in the Pontocho area. Restaurants open up wooden decks held up by stilts overlooking the water, and diners are able to enjoy the mountain view in the distance and the cool river breeze.
Sanzenin Temple in the rural Ohara area of Kyoto is breathtaking during the summer months. This temple is famous for some of the most well-known statues of Buddha from the Heian time period, but their extensive gardens cannot be forgotten. We personally recommend a slightly rainy day, as the green of the moss garden will truly shine. From mid-June, the temple also features one of the largest gardens of hydrangeas in Kyoto.
The Gion Festival is the crowning jewel of Kyoto summer events and is arguably the most famous festival in all of Japan. With a parade of impressive floats during the day time and food stalls and drink vendors set up during the night, there is so much to see and do. Traditional ceremonies pertaining to the festival, open for viewing to the public, are also carried out throughout the festival time at the Yasaka Shrine in Gion.
The Arashiyama area in western Kyoto is reknowned for the beautiful views during the spring and fall season, but the green of the famous bamboo groves shine during the summer months. Although it is a popular tourist destination and can be crowded during the day time, the early morning is often peaceful and quiet, letting you take in its tranquility.
