‘Shobu-an’ machiya house: a traditional holiday house (vacation rental) fantastically located near downtown Shijo, Nishiki Market and a leisurely walk to the atmospheric lanes of Ponto-cho alley.

Named after the color of the Japanese iris, a deep violet-hued flower, your stay at “Shobu-an” will be the highlight of your visit to Kyoto. Slide open the doors and be greeted by sky-high 'hibukuro' ceilings, spacious kitchen, and traditional Japanese rooms. The larger living room is the perfect place to relax while admiring the Japanese garden, or enjoying a light meal. The Japanese room near the entrance can be used as a bedroom when more than 7 guests stay here.

Head upstairs to the 2F, and find yourself transported another world away. The Western-style room features 2 large queen-size beds, a vanity table, and shoji windows lining the wall. The adjacent room features a tokonoma alcove, quintessential tatami floors, and washi light fixtures. This renovated Kyoto machiya house also includes modern facilities such as WiFi, IH stovetop, washing machine, and more.

About This Machiya House

Iris Colour A vibrant noren curtain welcomes guests into "Shobu-an", which means 'iris'. Enter the house to discover a spacious, traditional machiya house brimming with architectural delights.

'Hibukuro' chimney A space that once ventilated the kitchen below now fills the machiya with sunlight. Enjoy this openness as you use the fully-equipped kitchen outfitted with a sleek black countertop.

Unique architecture "Shobu-an" is a 'unagi no nedoko' machiya. Meaning "eel's sleeping place", this style of machiya is narrow yet long, with a fresh inner garden at the rear of the house.

Western-style bedroom The light fixture provides a modern take on the traditional Japanese paper lantern. Find a dressing table and mirror in the bedroom, an ideal spot for preparing for the day.

Living room Experience traditional Japanese living in a room with earthen white walls and rich dark woodwork. Slide open lattice screen to reveal a private "tsuboniwa" garden.

Bathroom A sophisticated bathroom with Hinoki lemon-scented wood and dark stone tiles. Mirrors that span the entire room add a modern and spacious feel. View the garden from the shower and bath.

Bedding Set-up: The number of beddings prepared will match the number of guests you have made a reservation for, and not the maximum capacity.
Please take a look at the floor plan for details on what beddings are available in this house (as it will differ depending on each house). To make a request for a specific bedding set-up, you must contact MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN at least 2 days before your check-in date. Up to 2 children (5-years-old and younger) staying under our “Children’s Policy” will be required to share a bedding with another guests.

Is this a hotel in Kyoto?: No, this is not a hotel in Kyoto. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kyoto!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
