‘Yorozuha’ machiya house: a traditional Kyoto holiday house (vacation rental) located a short walk from the picturesque Kamogawa River, historical streets of Gion, and famous sites such as Kiyomizu Temple and Yasaka Shrine.

Pass through the ‘noren’ entrance curtains, and you’ll be greeted by a charming tatami-lined living room that also features a modern kitchen. This space offers a tranquil view of a traditional Japanese garden, which is lush and green from season to season. Upstairs, you’ll find a classic Japanese-style room, seating area accented with bamboo, and bedroom with wooden beams stretching across the ceiling. Enjoy the various traditional motifs of Kyoto's nature and seasonal atmosphere throughout the machiya house during your stay.

Living Room Illuminated with Greenery A traditional Japanese space that features ‘tatami’ flooring, traditional wooden beams, and a large window from which natural light illuminates the space. Relax in this space as you reminisce about your day in Kyoto, or enjoy a meal with family and friends. Calligraphy art by artist Rinsen Obitsu also decorates this room.

Spacious Western-style Bedroom A spacious Western-style room with two semi-double beds for a comfortable night's sleep. The 'kyo-karakami' wallpaper depicts a traditional design known as 'Yukiwa'. Also referred to as "the six flowers of the four seasons," it can be interpreted as a flower or snowflake depending on the season.

Renovated & Modern Kitchen A kitchen perfect for making meals during your stay. This renovated kitchen includes an IH stovetop, microwave, toaster, kettle, pots/pans, cooking utensils, cutlery, and more. Desk Area featuring Bamboo Work Whether you are getting ready for the day, or need a space to do a little work - this cozy desk area is the perfect place to do so. Bringing nature within this machiya space, the backdrop behind the desk features natural bamboo. In addition to a large mirror, this area features a spacious desk, comfortable seating, and plenty of natural light.

'Tsuboniwa' Garden A microcosm of nature that is not only beautiful to admire, but brings in light and breath of fresh air into the machiya house. These compact, traditional Japanese gardens are known as “tsuboniwa,” were essential in traditional machiya homes. Spend the day in this machiya house marveling at its beauty as its view changes from day to night, and throughout the seasons.

Showcasing Kyoto’s Craftsmanship Handcrafted Kyo-karakami (hand-stamped traditional paper) decorate sliding doors and walls to showcase the skills of Kyoto’s craftsmen. The motif featured here is known as “gosan-no-kiri” - featuring leaves of the auspicious Paulownia tree. This particular crest was created specifically for the Emperor of Japan.

Traditional Machiya Architecture A quintessential Kyoto-style machiya exterior. It features wooden ‘koshi’ lattice, a ‘noren’ entrance curtain, and a window on the 2nd floor known as a ‘mushiko mado’. If you look closely at the roof of the 1st floor, you’ll notice a little figurine. This figure is of ‘shoki-san’ - a guardian of machiya homes. Many machiya homes place this on the roof to protect and ward off evil spirits that may enter one's home!

To make a request for a specific bedding set-up, you must contact MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN at least 2 days before your check-in date. Up to 2 children (5-years-old and younger) staying under our “Children’s Policy” will be required to share a bedding with another guests.

Is this a hotel in Kyoto?: No, this is not a hotel in Kyoto. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kyoto!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
