‘Rikyu-an’ machiya house: a traditional holiday house (vacation rental) nestled within the historical Higashiyama neighborhood. This machiya townhouse is just a short walk from Kiyomizu Temple, the stone-paved streets of Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka, and the oldest standing pagoda in Kyoto, Yasaka-no-to Pagoda.

Renovated using plenty of Japanese cedar (杉板; sugiita), this traditional kyomachiya house features elegant "ichimonji-kawara" roof style, and circular windows inspired by tea ceremony rooms. Enter into this machiya townhouse to be greeted by soft light, rich woodwork details, and a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The entrance features a tranquil study, which is the perfect place to enjoy a book, or ready for the day. Move further into this machiya to find a spacious tatami-lined Japanese room, modern kitchen, and 'tsuboniwa' garden. On the 2F is Japanese-style and relaxing Western-style bedroom, with tea room-inspired doorways and delicate 'washi' paper windows. Retreat to a private and intimate space during your time in Kyoto.

Traditional Kyomachiya House A beautifully preserved Kyoto machiya townhouse awaits. The exterior showcases wooden window lattice, hanging ‘sudare’ window blinds, 'ichimonji kawara’ roof tiles and protective bamboo strips called ‘inuyarai’.

Bedding Set-up: The number of beddings prepared will match the number of guests you have made a reservation for, and not the maximum capacity.
Please take a look at the floor plan for details on what beddings are available in this house (as it will differ depending on each house). To make a request for a specific bedding set-up, you must contact MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN at least 2 days before your check-in date. Up to 2 children (5-years-old and younger) staying under our “Children’s Policy” will be required to share a bedding with another guests.

Is this a hotel in Kyoto?: No, this is not a hotel in Kyoto. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kyoto!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
