Gion-Minami Banka
"Machiya House"

A traditional machiya house that can be found in the heart of Gion, come and explore first-hand a neighborhood steeped in Kyoto’s rich history.

“Hanamachi” District (花街) – also know as a “flower district” when translated literally — these historical areas are where geiko & maiko entertain customers by performing classical music, dance, and traditional games.

Kyoto is famous for its 5 Hanamachi Districts, with Gion being one of the most well-known & recognizable. Hanamikoji Street is a long street dotted with traditional machiya townhouses, ochaya, and restaurants serving Kyoto cuisine.

At the end of this street is Kenninji Temple, an important Zen Buddhist Temple. Turn a few corners from Kenninji to find yourself in front of “Gion-Minami Banka” machiya house.

“Gion-Minami Banka” borrows its name from a 4-character Japanese idiom「千変万化」(sen-pen-ban-ka), an idiom which refers to “innumerable changes”.

You will discover that the machiya house embodies this idea through its design and architecture. While the exterior of Gion-Minami Banka reflects the classic features of many machiya houses – lattice windows and doors, wooden features, ichimonji kawara roof tiles (roof tiles that resemble the kanji character “一”), and earthen walls – its interior showcases the different sides of Japanese culture.

Tucked away in the backstreet of Hanamikoji Street lies a machiya house designed with brown earthen walls, and lattice windows and wooden details. Blending seamlessly with the atmosphere of the surrounding neighborhood, this traditional machiya house will transform into your home during your stay.

Kitchen/Dining Room:

Push aside the shoji doors to reveal a spacious area that radiates warmth and provides an atmosphere for you to relax within during your stay. A wooden table with Western-style seating to seat and a fully functional kitchen tucked away in the corner.

For larger groups of family and friends, you’ll be able to cook, dine, and relax together in this open plan space. For small groups, you can revel in the spaciousness and spend a luxurious & relaxing time during your stay.

Living Room:

To the left of the dining room is where you can wind down as you sit on the inviting sofa – from where you can view the Japanese garden. The ceiling of this room stretches up towards the second floor to create an expansive space, and ushers in a flood of natural light to brighten up the room.

The bathroom has been updated with sleek modern fixtures, with the addition of traditional Japanese elements. With a window that looks out into the garden, and a bathtub that is enveloped by wood, forget about time as you unwind after a day of exploring the historical streets of Kyoto.

A separate toilet space can be found on the 1st floor, and 2nd floor.

Japanese-style Room (1st floor):

A room lined with traditional tatami flooring, and a skylight above that allows for the natural light to enter the space, and a washi (delicately thin, Japanese paper) used as wall paper round out the room. Up to 3 futons can be set in this room.

Western-style Room

2 twin-sized Western beds are available in this room for your comfort. Differing from the design and details found on the 1st floor, the walls of this room is a dark, blue-grey color, which contrast the sandy colored wood planks of the ceiling.

Japanese-Style Room

Adjacent to the Western-style room lies a second tatami-lined room, with shoji doors covering an entire length of a wall. The delicately thin paper that cover the shoji doors allows for a flood of natural light to filter into the room, highlighting the details of the ceiling and intricate details of the washi wallpaper. Up to 3 Japanese-style futon bedding can be set here.
