About This Machiya House

Traditional Kyo-machiya Architecture Slide open the lattice wooden doors & step into a spacious machiya house. This Japanese house showcases the traditional Kyoto-style architectural layout known as ‘unagi no nedoko’ (an eel’s sleeping place). Originally a place of residence and work for merchants and their families, machiya homes had a small frontage while their interior stretched far and back.

Renovated Kitchen An open kitchen perfect for making light meals during your stay. This renovated kitchen includes an IH stovetop, microwave, toaster, kettle, pots/pans, cooking utensils, cutlery, and more. Stop by a local market to pick-up locally grown produce and make a relaxing meal.

'Tsuboniwa' Garden A ‘tsuboniwa’ garden was essential for traditional machiya homes. As houses in Kyoto were built close together (often sharing a wall or even a roof), the ‘tsuboniwa’ garden played an essential role in providing a fresh breeze & natural light through the house. Lounge around on the ‘engawa’ wood deck, and admire the garden throughout the 4 seasons.

Spacious Living Room & Dining Room Now transformed into a dining room, this space was known formerly as a ‘doma’. Traditionally, the ‘doma’ was an area with earthen floors, and was used as casual space to speak with neighbors, a garage & even a kitchen. Now, you can gather around the large wooden table to reminisce about your day, enjoy a cup of tea, or enjoy a relaxing meal.

Kiyomizu-yaki Pottery Discover traditional Japanese art pieces throughout this machiya house. Kyoto is known as the birthplace of ‘Kiyomizu-yaki’ pottery & porcelain. Dating back to the 16th period, skilled artisans worked in the area just below Kiyomizu Temple to create pottery decorated with colorful pigments.

Bedding Set-up: The number of beddings prepared will match the number of guests you have made a reservation for, and not the maximum capacity.
Please take a look at the floor plan for details on what beddings are available in this house (as it will differ depending on each house). To make a request for a specific bedding set-up, you must contact MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN at least 2 days before your check-in date. Up to 2 children (5-years-old and younger) staying under our “Children’s Policy” will be required to share a bedding with another guests.

Is this a hotel in Kyoto?: No, this is not a hotel in Kyoto. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kyoto!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
