‘Marikoji’ machiya house: a renovated, completely private traditional Japanese holiday house (vacation rental) located in the bustling downtown Shijo area. You'll be within walking distance to Nishiki Market (a 400-year old shopping street lined by more than one hundred shops and restaurants), and the historical streets of Gion and its elegant atmosphere.

On the first floor, you'll not only find a relaxing sofa, but a 'horigotatsu' in the Japanese-style room. A 'horigotatsu' is a traditional Japanese table that's low to the ground and has a sunken floor beneath so that you can comfortably stretch out your legs. Enjoy the view of the Japanese garden from here as you wind down after a day of exploring the city. Upstairs, you'll have 2 separate bedrooms: a bright & airy Western-style bedroom complete with 2 double-size beds and a 'tokonoma' alcove, and a spacious Japanese-style room with high ceilings and tatami-lined floors. This Japanese house also includes: Kitchen, Bathroom with a garden view, 2 Toilets, Washing Machine, Floor Heating, and more.

  • ‘Marikoji’ Machiya Holiday House Enjoy the 4 distinct seasons of Japan At the furthest end of this Japanese house is a ‘tsuboniwa’ garden, which not only provides light and fresh air, but an atmosphere of zen. This garden features Japanese camelia and ‘momiji’ maple leaves that flourish with the seasons. At night, turn on the garden light to illuminate the space, and enjoy the view from the living room.
  • ‘Marikoji’ Machiya Holiday House Entrance with a Stone Lantern Pass through the entrance curtains and slide open the door, and you’ll be greeted by a traditional stone lantern typically found in tea gardens. Known as an ‘ishi toro’ and hold various meanings depending on its design. It is not only used as a way to light the way, but also holds meaning as a way to overcome trials & tribulations one may encounter.

Located in the downtown of Shijo-Kawaramachi, ‘Marikoji’ machiya house offers easy access to the main shopping & dining district, as well as Kyoto's most popular sightseeing attractions. A short walk east will lead you towards the popular Gion neighborhood: Kyoto's historical geiko and teahouse area. You can also jump on the subway from Gion-Shijo station, which will bring you directly to the red torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine, Tofukuji Temple and more.

We also recommend you stopping by the famous Nishiki Market, also known as "Kyoto's Kitchen". You’ll not only find great restaurants here, but shops selling fresh seafood, Kyoto vegetables, and more!
