Within walking distance to picturesque Tofukuji Temple, a machiya inspired by Kyoto’s famous bamboo groves

‘Yoinotake’ machiya house: a traditional Kyoto holiday house (vacation rental) located in the historical Higashiyama area. Just a few minutes walk from one of Kyoto’s oldest temples, Sanjusangendo Temple, and with easy access to Gion, Tofukuji Temple and Fushimi Inari Shrine.

A city known for its picturesque bamboo groves, they not only play into the scenic views of many Kyoto temples and shrines, but have been the source of inspiration for many poets and artists throughout history. ‘Yoinotake’ machiya house also takes inspiration from these serene yet vibrant bamboo groves by incorporating its delicate features into its machiya design.

Step through the noren curtains and into a calming atmosphere surrounded by bamboo. As you move through the spacious dining room, you'll be greeted with a perfect view of a karesansui garden. On the first floor are 2 quintessentially Japanese-style rooms, a modern kitchen, and a luxurious bathroom complete with a ‘goemon’ cauldron-style bathtub. A western-style bedroom occupies the entire 2F, and features high ceilings, wooden beams, and relaxing sofa.

About This Machiya House

Private Machiya Holiday House A beautifully renovated two-storey Japanese townhouse located in the serene Higashiyama area. The dark wooden exterior is achieved through the traditional method of ‘yakisugi’ - where wood planks are purposely burnt or charred as a way to protect & preserve the wood from the elements.

'Karesansui' Japanese Rock Garden Find two smaller gardens near the entrance that feature bamboo, and a large ‘karesansui’ garden towards the back. Reminiscent of some of Kyoto’s most famous rock gardens, such as the gardens of the nearby Tofukuji Temple, make this your own private space of zen during your time in Kyoto.

Living Room & Dining Room Relax in a dining room accented by the warmth of bamboo light fixtures. The solid wood table is the perfect place to gather and enjoy a meal, or reminisce about your day in Kyoto. Slide open the shoji doors to reveal the adjacent Japanese room and view of the garden.

Spacious Western-style Bedroom Walk upstairs to a spacious bedroom, which occupies the entire top floor. High ceilings show off wooden beams and the history that is embedded in this machiya’s design. Unwind on the sofa as soft natural light filters in through the shoji paper windows.

Up to 2 children (5-years-old and younger) staying under our “Children’s Policy” will be required to share a bedding with another guests.

Is this a hotel in Kyoto?: No, this is not a hotel in Kyoto. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kyoto!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
