‘Suigetsu’ machiya holiday house: ideally located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama area, & a short walk to Kiyomizu Temple and the historical streets of Gion. This traditional kyo machiya is named after the Japanese 4-character idiom, “Kyoka-Suigetsu” (‘flower in the mirror, and the moon in the water’). It can be interpreted as "beauty that you cannot touch & cannot express in words, therefore can only be admired".
Slide open the door to this inviting traditional Kyoto townhouse. On the 1F, you will be greeted with an impressive view of a Japanese ‘tsuboniwa’ garden that reflects upon the sleek, black floors. Enjoy this view while relaxing in the tatami area, or enjoying a meal at the dining table. Hidden behind the sliding wooden doors is a kitchenette with a full range of appliances, and a washing machine.
Upstairs are two Japanese-style rooms enveloped in traditional earthen walls, and decorated with delicate washi light fixtures. Although both rooms feature quintessential tatami floors, one room can sleep 2 guests on futon beddings, whilst the other is fitted with a western-style double bed. This renovated Kyoto machiya house also includes modern facilities such as floor heating (1F), renovated bathroom, dining table, WiFi, and more.
