Takasegawa “Takase Canal” (高瀬川)

This tranquil body of water flows from the Nijo area, south towards the Fushimi area of Kyoto. Running almost parallel to the Kamogawa River, this canal was originally constructed to transport goods up and down the city during the Edo Period.

Although no longer used for its original purpose, many locals and travelers gather here every year to view the beautiful pink cherry blossoms that bloom along both sides of the canal. Garaku-an machiya house also resides along the road of the Takasegawa River, providing you with a serene view during your stay in Kyoto.

Ochaya tea houses were once a popular establishment – where customers could converse with geiko & maiko girls, while being entertained by games, and song & dance.

Garaku-an machiya house has been re-designed to resemble these quintessentially Japanese wooden architectures. During the evening, the lattice windows allow for the interior light to faintly trickle through– recalling a fascinating history and culture.
