‘Meika’ machiya house: a renovated 100 year-old traditional Japanese holiday house (vacation rental) located in the Gion-Higashiyama area of Kyoto city. This location will offer you great access to the UNESCO Site Kiyomizu Temple, Kenninji Temple, and downtown Kyoto. The surrounding neighborhood also offers many cafes, long-established traditional restaurants, local supermarkets, and more.

As you walk along the bustling street leading up to the Yasaka Pagoda, turn down a hidden alley into a serene oasis. The 1F of this traditional Japanese house features a spacious living-dining room with several sofas & chairs for you to relax on. Enjoy a relaxing bath with a garden view after a day of exploring city. The ‘touki’ (porcelain) bath is inspired by the traditional ‘goemon,’ which are round, cauldron-shaped baths commonly used during the Edo period. On the 2F are 2 bedrooms: a western-style bedroom with a queen-size bed, and a classic tatami room that can accommodate up to 2 guests on futon beds.

A little background as to how ‘Meika’ earned its name: ‘Meika’ machiya house is located in the Yumiyacho neighborhood, which used to hold an annual meigen ceremony. “Meigen” is a Shinto ceremony during which the bowstrings (of a bow & arrow) were played to drive away evil spirits and bring in good fortune. With this feeling in mind, we hope that all guests who stay at ‘Meika’ also experience great luck & joy.

Traditional Japanese Designs The traditional Japanese design of the room, with its writing desk and round window, gives the room a distinctly Japanese charm. This is a peaceful space where you can take a break with a cup of tea or coffee, a tranquil atmosphere that only a tatami room can provide.

'Tsuboniwa' Garden A quintessential element to traditional machiya homes are the 'tsuboniwa' gardens. These small, inner gardens are not only visually pleasing with their lush greener, but provide a breath of fresh air within the space.

Washing Machine & More To make your stay more comfortable & convenient, this machiya house has a number of modern appliances. On the 1F is a washing machine (with dryer function), wine cellar, portable heaters for colder months, safe, and more.

Please take a look at the floor plan for details on what beddings are available in this house (as it will differ depending on each house). To make a request for a specific bedding set-up, you must contact MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN at least 2 days before your check-in date. Up to 2 children (5-years-old and younger) staying under our “Children’s Policy” will be required to share a bedding with another guests.

Is this a hotel in Kyoto?: No, this is not a hotel in Kyoto. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kyoto!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
