“Hanamachi” District (花街) – also know as a “flower district” when translated literally -- these historical areas are where geiko & maiko entertain customers by performing classical music, dance, and traditional games.

Kyoto is famous for its 5 Hanamachi Districts, with Gion being one of the most well-known & recognizable. Hanamikoji Street is a long street dotted with traditional machiya townhouses, ochaya, and restaurants serving Kyoto cuisine. At the end of this street is Kenninji Temple, an important Zen Buddhist Temple. Turn a few corners from Kenninji to find yourself in front of “Gion-Minami Banka” machiya house.
