‘Gion Minami Banka’ machiya house: a traditional holiday house (vacation rental) fantastically located in the central Kyoto area of Gion, the historical geiko district.

As you walk along the atmospheric Hanamikoji Street lined with traditional teahouses, step into a quaint side street to discover ‘Gion-Minami Banka’.

A machiya inspired by classic artwork, admire scenes from Japanese folklore on ‘fusuma’ and ‘shoji’ sliding doors throughout the house.

Make yourself at home with your guests in the Western-style living room and at the spacious dining table. Modern comforts such as the bathroom, heated flooring and more are also featured for your comfort.

‘Gion-Minami Banka’ Machiya Holiday Home

Inspired by traditional art Tucked away in the backstreets of the celebrated Hanamikoji Street of Gion lies a traditional machiya house. Step inside to discover an interior inspired by renowned Japanese artwork.

Luxurious space Take a seat at the sofa and take in the garden and stunning golden art piece depicting blooming sakura blossoms. The ceiling extends towards the 2nd floor, creating a bright and open space.

Dining room and kitchen This is a spacious area where you can relax and enjoy a meal. The ‘shoji’ paper sliding doors leading into the Japanese room is printed with a dramatic scene from traditional folklore.

Bathroom With rainfall shower and beautiful bathtub that looks onto the garden, surround yourself in the luxury of modern design and the warmth of traditional woodwork.

Western-style bedroom Slide open the ‘fusuma’ sliding doors to reveal a room colored in calming blue-grey. The wooden ceiling is a traditional feature of machiyas that lends warmth to the space.

Bedding Set-up: The number of beddings prepared will match the number of guests you have made a reservation for, and not the maximum capacity.
Please take a look at the floor plan for details on what beddings are available in this house (as it will differ depending on each house). To make a request for a specific bedding set-up, you must contact MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN at least 2 days before your check-in date. Up to 2 children (5-years-old and younger) staying under our “Children’s Policy” will be required to share a bedding with another guests.

Is this a hotel in Kyoto?: No, this is not a hotel in Kyoto. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kyoto!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
