「墨継ぐ」「住み継ぐ」A city where old embraces new, and new embraces old.

Sumitsugu machiya house derives its name from 「墨継ぎ」(sumitsugi), the act of refilling a brush with new sumi-ink and continuing your calligraphic art. Playing upon the kanji characters of 「墨継ぎ」is「住み継ぎ」-- which can also be read as sumitsugi -- and refers to the act of continuing the way of life.

By continuing the traditions and memories passed on between generations, and incorporating new elements within the space, you'll be able to fully experience both past and present within Sumitsugu machiya house.
