Sumitsugu

「墨継ぐ」「住み継ぐ」A city where old embraces new, and new embraces old.

Sumitsugu machiya house derives its name from 「墨継ぎ」(sumitsugi), the act of refilling a brush with new sumi-ink and continuing your calligraphic art. Playing upon the kanji characters of 「墨継ぎ」is「住み継ぎ」-- which can also be read as sumitsugi -- and refers to the act of continuing the way of life.

By continuing the traditions and memories passed on between generations, and incorporating new elements within the space, you'll be able to fully experience both past and present within Sumitsugu machiya house.

Kyoto is famous for giving birth to numerous stories and legends that paint a picture of its rich history. Gojo-Ohashi Bridge is just one of numerous historical places only a few minutes walk away from Sumitsugu machiya house.

Also located nearby is Gojo Dori, a street lined with shops that display the well-renowned Kiyomizu-yaki pottery and porcelain. Follow the street east to find yourself at Kiyomizu Temple. Travel north to find Kennin-ji Temple, and the historical neighborhood of Gion & Ponto-cho.

Much like Sumitsugu itself, this machiya house can be found within a neighborhood that is home to both traditional and modern. This machiya house is perfect for those who are looking to experience Kyoto by exploring the backstreets, and wandering throughout the city to discover all of its hidden gems.
