"Sumitsugu" machiya house derives its name from 「墨継ぎ」(sumitsugi), the act of refilling a calligraphy brush with new sumi-ink. Playing upon the characters of 「墨継ぎ」is「住み継ぎ」- which can also be read as sumitsugi - and refers to the act of continuing the way of life.

Follow the street to find yourself at Kiyomizudera Temple, a 14-minute walk away. Travel north to find Kennin-ji Temple, and the historical neighborhood of Gion & Ponto-cho just 11-minutes away on foot.
