‘Sumitsugu’ machiya house: a stunning traditional holiday house (vacation rental) nestled in-between the Kamogawa River, and the historical Higashiyama Area. This machiya house is hidden within one of Kyoto's many hidden lanes. From the exterior, you may not imagine a spacious house, but slide open the entrance door to reveal an expansive and inviting house.

"Sumitsugu" machiya house derives its name from 「墨継ぎ」(sumitsugi), the act of refilling a calligraphy brush with new sumi-ink. Playing upon the characters of 「墨継ぎ」is「住み継ぎ」- which can also be read as sumitsugi - and refers to the act of continuing the way of life.

The 1F features a traditional Japanese-style room and modern living room with sofa seating - both with a relaxing view of a tsuboniwa Japanese garden. You'll also find a fully renovated kitchen, and luxurious bathroom that also offers a view of the garden.

Upstairs are 2 bedrooms (one Western-style, one Japanese-style), in addition to a shower room and toilet for your convenience. Perfect for larger groups of family and friends, this renovated Kyoto machiya house also includes modern facilities such as floor heating, WiFi, IH stovetop, washing machine, and more.

Bedding Set-up: The number of beddings prepared will match the number of guests you have made a reservation for, and not the maximum capacity.
Please take a look at the floor plan for details on what beddings are available in this house (as it will differ depending on each house). To make a request for a specific bedding set-up, you must contact MACHIYA RESIDENCE INN at least 2 days before your check-in date. Up to 2 children (5-years-old and younger) staying under our “Children’s Policy” will be required to share a bedding with another guests.

Is this a hotel in Kyoto?: No, this is not a hotel in Kyoto. Our machiya homes are self-catering, private Japanese-style holiday homes (vacation rentals), which are reserved exclusively for 1 group per day. (Guests will not be sharing the house with any other guests). As there are no staff on-site at the house, our traditional Japanese machiya homes are perfect for travelers interested in immersing themselves in local culture in Kyoto!

If you require assistance during your stay, our friendly staff are available via email or telephone between 10AM~7PM. (Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day.)
Please note that as this is a self-catering holiday homes, and not a hotel, housekeeping during your stay is available for guests who stay 4 night or more.
However, our staff are available for garbage pick-up, to provide additional towels during your stay, and more. We also encourage our guests to reuse bath towels to help us reduce the consumption of water.
