Tokonoma alcoves in tatami rooms are traditionally decorated with hanging scrolls, flower arrangements, objects, and art. But you might notice that not every Japanese room has one.
That’s because tokonoma were originally built in main formal rooms where honored guests were welcomed. Displayed items were never chosen at random, as each was carefully selected to show respect and thoughtfulness toward the guest of honor.
