Ideally located near the historic Gion and Miyagawacho geiko districts. A traditional machiya house featuring the distinctive 'tsushinikai' architecture style.
‘Mitsuna’ machiya house: a traditional Japanese holiday home (vacation rental) inspired by the narrow alleys that weave through the historic Miyagawacho and Gion districts of Kyoto. This distinctive machiya showcases the tsushinikai architectural style, featuring an intermediate floor design, unique to Kyoto townhouses. During your stay, you'll be within walking distance of Gion, as well as Kiyomizu Temple, Kenninji Temple, the Kamogawa River, and more.
While the exterior may appear compact, sliding open the wooden door reveals a spacious interior that can comfortably accommodate up to 9 guests. Relax in the traditional misenoma tatami area or on the sofa seating with a TV, enjoy a soak in the hinoki cypress wood bathtub, and unwind in the tatami-lined washitsu room overlooking the Japanese garden. A dining table with recessed leg space offers comfortable seating, and the modern kitchen is fully equipped for meal preparation. High ceilings and a skylight brighten the home with natural light throughout the day.
Mitsuna includes 3 bedrooms: one Western-style room with a queen-size bed and two Japanese-style rooms with futon bedding. For added convenience, the second floor also provides a shower room, wash basin, and toilet.
A little background on how ‘Mitsuna’ earned its name: Surrounded by narrow alleyways connecting the main streets and machiya rowhouses that have stood for over 100 years, these pathways have connected people and the city across generations. We named this machiya “Mitsuna” by combining two Japanese kanji characters for ‘heart’ and ‘connection’ (心継), hoping it becomes a place where guests treasure the connections formed during their travels, much like the alleyways found in the neighborhood. From the time spent and memories made, to the bonds formed with the people and culture of Kyoto.
