What differentiates “Yoitsubaki” machiya house from others is the large daibei-zukuri wall surrounding the exterior. Constructed from wood and plaster, this wall essentially created a secluded space detached from surrounding neighbors.

The daibe-zukuri wall was popular amongst the wealthy merchants, doctors, and those of the upperclass, as not only did it provide privacy, but allowed for a front courtyard & inner garden. Enjoy this unique machiya design during your stay in Kyoto. The two gardens at this house will allow you to appreciate the architecture, design, and changing seasons of Japan.
