Exuding a calm and inviting atmosphere, Akebono-an machiya house combines rich, dark wooden features along with natural light to brighten up the entire property. From the glass doors that look out into the garden, to the skylight that has been installed above the stairs, “hikari” (光、light) becomes the main focal point of this charming home.

The stairway is fully enveloped in traditional washi paper — handmade Japanese paper made by the famous Kurotaniwashi craftsmen– of a cerulean blue. This beautiful washi paper showcases techniques that evoke images of the past, while the vivid blue color adds a touch of modernity.

Akebono-an is a renovated machiya house, that was first built over 80 year ago. To maintain the integrity of its past, while offering modern comforts, careful thought has been placed in the redesign and architecture of this house.

Look up towards the ceiling, and you will find several old, wooden beams stretched across to provide a charming design element, and provide structure to the house.

A refurbished bathroom with up-to-date facilities (including a waterfall shower head, sleek bathroom countertops), traditional tatami flooring, and plastered walls using age-old techniques.
