Did you know that traditional zabuton (Japanese floor cushions) aren’t perfectly square?
While many modern zabuton look like square cushions, the traditional design was actually slightly rectangular.
This subtle difference has a purpose: when sitting in seiza (the formal kneeling position), your folded legs fit neatly on the cushion, keeping the posture elegant and comfortable.
A traditional zabuton also has a designated “front.” The side without a visible seam is considered the front and is placed facing the guest in formal settings such as ryotei (traditional restaurants).
Take a seat on the zabuton in one of our private Japanese machiya holiday homes, like Nadeshiko Shirakawa machiya house shown here, enjoy a cup of tea, and spend a tranquil moment during your next trip to Japan.
