Shinsengumi Police Force, Late Edo Period.

Towards the end of the Edo Period, and beginning of the Meiji Period, a new hybrid samurai-police force emerged in Kyoto to protect the Tokugawa Shogunate (leading feudal Japanese government). Known as the “Shinsengumi,” their prominence was not only felt through their military position, but also visually — the Shinsengumi uniform consisted of a bright asagi blue-colored haori (a jacket worn over their kimono).

This striking turquoise-blue asagi color has been incorporated throughout the interior of Asagi-an — from the washi-paper colored walls, porcelain dish ware, and more — giving the machiya house a calming yet captivating atmosphere.

Asagi-an is our newest machiya house! Please send us an INQUIRY EMAIL for availability regarding this machiya.
