Look closely near the ceiling, and you’ll find a glimpse of something unique—takekomai, the original woven bamboo latticework of this private, traditional Japanese holiday house.

Takekomai is a traditional construction method where thin strips of bamboo are woven into a grid to form the base of earthen walls. Once this base is made, earthen plaster is applied to both sides. Bamboo was used not only for its strength, but also for its natural ability to regulate humidity—making it perfectly suited to Japan’s climate.

This method, developed over generations, was commonly used up until about 50 years ago. Today, it remains an important part of Japan’s architectural heritage.

In this Kyoto machiya, sunlight filters down through a skylight, gently illuminating the historic textures of bamboo and earth. Take a moment to relax and enjoy a refreshing stay surrounded by tradition and natural light here at ‘Yuzunoe’ machiya house.
