'Nijiri-guchi' and Tea Rooms – Machiya House Features
This traditional Japanese house features a tea room within! The square opening that you see is an actual doorway that was once used. It looks like it could be a hidden doorway for a ninja, but it was the entranceway for tea ceremony guests.
Known as a ‘nijiri-guchi,’ it requires guests to crawl through in order to enter the room. It not only allows tea ceremony guests to feel as if they have entered a new atmosphere, but it showed that everyone who entered was of equal rank. (i.e. Even if you were a high-ranking samurai warrior, you wouldn’t be able to enter without removing your sword)
This room can now be used as a place to relax or an additional bedroom when you stay in ‘Gion Shirakawa Kouki’ Machiya House!
‘Gion Shirakawa Kouki’ Machiya House is a renovated machiya accommodation located in Kyoto, just steps from the Shirakawa River in the historical Gion area.
From the unique entranceway, the corner alcove displaying art, to the wooden pillars and more, this space showcases every detail of a traditional tea ceremony room. The best part is that you have the space all to yourself while staying in this Japanese holiday house in Kyoto.
You can find the small entrance to the tea ceremony room just after you enter the traditional Japanese machiya house.
Another highlight of this machiya house is the beautiful painting in the dining and kitchen area, depicting a river scene with birds.
You can also enjoy a private tsuboniwa garden from the engawa off of the traditional living room while staying at Gion Shirakawa Kouki Machiya House.
There is a Japanese-style bedroom as well as a western-style bedroom n the 2nd floor of this machiya house. Futon beds can also be laid out in the Japanese room on the 1st floor, making it possible for up to 7 guests to stay in Gion Shirakawa Kouki.
